About us


A registered non-profit organization, the Choir was founded in 1983 with the purpose of promoting both Chinese and Western music in the Greater Toronto Area. It is made up of several dozens of keen music lovers.

Over its 26-year history, the Choir has been constantly exposed to the direction of many distinguished conductors, particularly with Mr. Yanqiao Wang, a renowned musician graduated from the Central Observatory of Music in Beijing, who has been providing the musical leadership for the past 13 years from 1991 to 2004. After Mr. Wang’s return to his alma mater, the Choir has been directed by Mr. Liu Zhipei in 2004.

The choir is now under the directions of Mr. Andrew Chung.

Each year, the Choir presents its own Annual Concert. In addition, the Choir participates in the multicultural concert – “Singing Together”, and the Annual Choral Concert of the Overseas Chinese Festival of the Arts.


The Choir has participated in numerous concerts in the past:

-

performed major works such as The Yellow River Cantata in the concert held by the Chinese Canadian Music Society of Ontario

-

participated and won gold medals in Toronto’s 1994 & 1995 Kiwanis Music Festival

-

participated in the 1995 performance of Camarata

-

organised a special program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of WW II

-

participated in Choral Gala to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Scarborough City in 1996

-

performed in the Gala Concert to celebrate the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997

-

participated in The Toronto Millennium “Back to Nature” Concert in 2000

In addition, the Choir sends out small groups to perform for organizations at special times like the Mid-autumn or New Year Festival. It also holds fundraising concerts for worthy causes.

Artistic Staff

Jason Jian Zhong Li, Vocal Coach


Jason Li is a renowned musician and trumpeter in the Toronto Chinese community. He currently plays with the Toronto Chinese Symphony and provides artistic support for various high school symphonies. Since 2008, Jason has been the vocal coach of the Chinese Canadian Choir of Toronto. His specific training technique has tremendously improved the vocal quality and harmony of the choir.

Jason graduated from Beijing Professional Arts Academy. He has participated in Beijing Music and Dance Troupe. As Beijing Symphonic Orchestra's principal trumpet, he performed solo pieces for over fourteen years. Throughout his career, Jason has collaborated with numerous orchestras and conductors and performed in over a thousand concerts. Since immigrating to Canada in 1999, Jason remained active in the Chinese music community. He trains young trumpeters at the high school level. Jason's methodical teaching has attracted many music lovers. Many of his students have appeared on the big stage and even went on to obtain recording contracts with record companies.



David Chang, Pianist


At the age of seven, David Chang studied piano with Professor Ju Hong Li (李菊红), who was one of the early teachers of the well known Chinese pianist Shi Kun Liu (劉詩昆) of The Central Conservatory of Music. At the age of eleven, he obtained both Grade 7 and Grade 8 Performance Certificate from the Royal British Music Conservatory in Hong Kong within a single year (equivalent to grade 9 & 10 for RCM). Immediately then he completed his ARCT Performance Certificate of the Royal Conservatory of Music with First Class Honours. David furthered his musical studies with another well known Chinese pianist, Tam Ka Kit, who is the 5th generation of students to Franz Liszt.

Though David is currently studying Mathematics for Education in York University, he continues to maintain his musicianship by working for numerous musical groups as well as individual musicians across Toronto, including the Chinese Canadian Choir of Toronto, Ontario Cross-Cultural Music Society, Swan Children Choir, and Creative Note Children Choir. Well known for his musicianship, enthusiasm and dedication towards music, David is now one of the youngest sought-after accompanists in Toronto. For contact please call 416-996-9868 or 905-887-9868.
